Paul B. Watkins, MD, director of the Hamner-UNC Institute for Drug Safety Sciences (www.thehamner.org in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, discusses his background in clinical hepatology, the importance of drug safety, and the major goals for his Institute. He is a physician scientist and clinically trained hepatologist with a focus on how the liver handles drugs. Dr. Watkins mentions work on idiosyncratic drug toxicities that give violent or fatal reactions among rare patients as well, along with collaborations with scientists in the FDA, Duke University and Wake Forest University.
